Emil Gillett Project 2: Laser Tote

Process

The purpose of this project was to make design changes to our tool tote that would allow it to be constructed using alternative strategies. This time, our tool tote was designed to be cut with the Zing Laser machine. Fusion360 CAD software was implemented again to purposefully redesign the tote. First, the dimensions of the tote had to be changed to accommodate the Zing laser. The thickness of the material was reduced, and this affected most of the design. Next, square tabs were introduced to the design to create an interlocking framework that would hold the completed project together. Finally, I reduced the size of the entire project to allow less material to be used and added artwork to the drawings in Illustrator.

One of the problems that I encountered with this project was that, during the first attempt at cutting the tote parts, the Zing machine malfunctioned. Thankfully, we had the alternative of using the GlowForge machine to complete the project. In order to use the GlowForge, I had to convert the Illustrator file to a PDF.  One of the trade-offs of using the GlowForge was that, in exchange for what I believe is higher precision cuts, it takes a longer time to complete each part. Therefore, I had to plan accordingly to complete the project on time. When applying the artwork to the tote panels, I realized that I had applied the images while the panels were upside-down in the GlowForge. To remedy this, I decided to use the backside of the panels for the artwork, this time allowing the art to be applied in the right orientation. This way, I did not have to use more material to make additional parts of the tote. After attaining all the parts, I assembled the pieces and glued them together.

Result

Despite the challenges I faced with changing the design to accommodate the Zing and the GlowForge machines, I created another sturdy, precisely-cut tool tote. Again, I believe the design changes paid off and that the tote will be useful for any purpose.

Reflection

I received ample help from my instructors in preparing and redesigning the tote. Despite challenges with the machinery, I was able to complete and submit a well-designed project on time.
