For my second project I decided to deviate from making a laser cut tool tote and instead opted to make a deck box that would be a perfect fit for 100 double-sleeved Magic: The Gathering cards. I choose 100 as this is the size of a "Commander" or "EDH" deck, a format that I enjoy playing with my friends. I have decent deck boxes, but not many made of wood, so I figured this would be a great opportunity to design a box that I could print out for myself and for friends on the cheap. The sketches I used for the box I started in Fusion360 and modeled the box in a manner similar to the tool tote project. I used four sketches: one for the bottom, one for the top, and one for either type of side. This allowed for easy changes to the design as well as a fast process altogether. Alec Frigo Laser Cut Tote

The start of this project was just taking the existing 3d model for my previous project and changing the dimensions, specifically the thickness, of the toolbox and then removing small sections of overlap. This created interlocking components that could be easily glued together. I then exported the model as a pdf and uploaded said pdf to a website that operated the laser cutter. I then ran the laser cutter and cut out all of the parts for my tote. After that, I used wood glue and some tape to fix all of the parts together. The result of this project is a small and lightweight tool tote that is more fragile than the one I handmade. This one, however, is more decorated and in my opinion, looks significantly nicer than the handcrafted one. Utility-wise, this laser-cut tote is more suited for small and lightweight objects, as opposed to tools and heavier components like the handmade one. If I were to do this project again, I would likely choose something other than a tool tote. Most...

Following the production of the hand machined totes, the class was tasked with a related assignment to modify our plans to spec for laser cut panels. The first step was to adjust the parameters to reflect the dimensions of the new material. We also needed to redefine the joining system to include box joints at the corners and mortis and tenons within the plane of some panels.  Once all of the dimension call-outs and joining systems were completed, we defined the material and prepared, executed a drawing from the design, and export the drawing as a pdf or dxf file (I tried both processes). There was an instance in the Makerspace when the larger of the two laser cutters was off-line. Students were asked to resize their projects for thinner material and smaller art boards to fit the smaller of the two printers. Process For the second project of this semester, I went through the whole process of turning my tool tote model into something I could cut on the laser cutter. Of course, after I had done that, I learned that I didn't have to make another tote, so I went back and did it again with a different idea I had come up with: a custom phone stand for my desk. Some time ago, I had identified this problem I have. I like to prop my phone up on my desk, but I also sometimes like to prop up other items in my phone stand too, and I obviously can't do this at the same time. I also often have as many as four charging cables on my desk, which are no problem while they're charging my various devices, but when I unplug the devices to use them I find myself with really no other option but to let the cables slide off the desk and fall to the floor. Kate Warford Project 1 - Building a Tool Tote

Process . This tote was first digitally assembled in Fusion360. The blueprints, which included the dimensions of the tote, were then printed to serve as a guide for construction. I measured, marked, and cut out each piece of the tote. I re-measured several of my pieces after discovering how much material the miter saw cuts off. After I had all of the pieces, I hand-sanded the rough, splintered edges. I paid careful attention the the smoothness of the tote handle. I glued my front and side pieces to the base or the tote, then used clamps to hold them in place while they dried. I then screwed these walls together, and to the tote base. I assembled the handle and its supporting side pieces separately (again by gluing and screwing). I glued this component into my tote, and screwed it in from the sides of the tote to reinforce the bond. I lightly sanded the tote again, by hand, to make sure it was smooth to the touch. Our first assignment required us to render an orthographic and isometric rendering of a tote box. Upon completion of the dimensioned plans, students were provided with material and tooling options to fabricate the boxes by hand. To design the tote, I followed the procedures to execute a sketch in the Fusion 360 program. I’d managed to run into some difficulty pulling measurements off of the front face while working on a side view. Starting a new sketch from scratch boosted my confidence. Zooming in on active areas during the process minimized the troubles with the dimension call out applications. Following completion of the sketch, the processes of extruding, combining, and exporting a drawing were followed incrementally. When working with the actual material, I found that some adjustments to proportion of some components and scale needed to be made. The end compartments were too narrow to offer much utility. Crystal Ramos Project 1 Tote Box

Process: We were instructed to build a tote tool box for our first assignment for ENGR2191 class. We first used Fusion 360 to build a model of the tote.  In Fusion 360 we set up our parameters. (thickness, height, length, width)  At first, Fusion 360 was a bit complicated to me, but the more I spent using the program the easier it became. The hardest part for me was getting the initial sketch completed (I'm still a little confused on this part), but after that it was easy enough for me to complete. Result: After the Sketch was completed in Fusion 360, we printed out the measurements that we used to build the tote. (My measurements, I'm sad to say, weren't the best, and I wished that I out more measurements on my copy) Building the the tote was fun, but at the same time a little intimating. I've never built anything like this before, so everything was new to me. I didn't want to mess up because I only had so much wood. I admit I did mess up ...
